Hello, I'm sending an Excel 2003 file through email (SMTP server) in a VBA macro using CDO.Message. When I get the email in Outlook and try to open the attachment I receive the 'File Format is not valid' error. I have MS Office 2007 on my laptop but the file should still open. There is no official keyboard shortcut for that. But you can customize a shortcut. Here's how: Go to Tools-> Customize Keyboard. Select 'Edit' from categories. On the right hand side select 'Formatting'. Go to 'Press new shortcut key' and type in a new shortcut. I used Command + Shift + v. And, click on 'Add'. Close the window. Now i can just use the normal copy ( Command + c) the cells from which i want to copy the formatting. Then go the cell where i want to paste the format and hit the keyboard shortcut (Command + Shift + v). The format is copied. ![]() Mark Whynot wrote: yes.the file association would be directed to excel due to the xls file extension. Right Click the file and OPEN WITH or simply start Word and do FILE>OPEN. We had this problem because a user opened a excel file in Word. If the file opens you know what happened. This really old discussion helped me with an xls file doing the same thing. Renamed to doc and it worked. Google docs was able to view it via html but couldn't read the xls - error'd there too. Just glad this thread was there. Just wanted to add my experience with this issue on a Mac running Office 2011 since you get the same error in this case. OS X 10.6 Office Mac 2011 14.4.3 Issue occurs when opening an xlsx document. You receive the error ' filename.xlsx file format is not valid.' Windows can open the document just fine. The issue only occurs on a Mac. Resolution: File was saved as a ' Strict Open XML Spreadsheet (*.xlsx)' on a Windows machine. ![]() Making sure to save the original as an ' Excel Workbook (*.xlsx)' resolves the issue. Hope this helps someone.
